Don’t Be an Online MLM Ostrich

ostrich1Are You an Online MLM Ostrich?

A lot of people come into online MLM marketing with blinders on. They’ve got the ostrich approach going, which means that they see and hear what they want to, and ignore the rest.

For instance, consider the MLM blog as a marketing tool. Here’s what happens with a lot of people. They are new to online MLM marketing so they join a training program to learn how to market their business online. This is perfectly valid. If the training program is top notch, when it teaches students about using a blog as an MLM marketing tool, it teaches them how to:

  1. Choose good topics
  2. Use highly-searched keywords with low competition
  3. Write great headlines
  4. Offer well-written content in a unique “online voice”
  5. Blog on a regular basis
  6. Promote blog entries around the web, using rss feeds, social media, and article directories
  7. Check statistics to see which keywords, topics, and categories are hitting home and which are missing the mark
  8. Make course corrections based on the statistics to attract the target audience more of the time
  9. Find signs if improvement and hang in there until results show up as signups and MLM income

This is a great list, and the really good training programs for online MLM marketing will teach you how to do all of this. The only question is, will you learn everything the training program is attempting to teach you?

Maybe. Maybe not.

What Newbies Usually Do With Online MLM Marketing

Let’s take that same list above and ask, “Does the average MLM newbie do each item on the list?”

  1. Good topics: Yes. Usually the training program provides some good samples and ideas.
  2. Keywords: No. Finding good keywords can eat up a lot of time, so most newbies find a keyword or two, then skip this process.
  3. Headlines: Maybe. If the newbie has a knack for writing, this is easy. If not, the headlines are often boring.
  4. Unique Online Voice: No. This takes a lot of time to develop, and most newbies never develop a unique and entertaining writing style.
  5. Blog Regularly: Yes. This is one of the easier “lessons” to learn and most newbies can proudly claim that they have blogged 3 days a week for at least 3 months.
  6. Promote Online: Maybe. Most people new to online MLM won’t do the necessary level of promotion to “get the word out,” but they will do some online promotion.
  7. Check Statistics: No. While it’s fun to open up the Google Analytics report for the first few weeks, actually tracking keywords and referral sources is a tedious and boring job, so this task usually falls by the wayside after the first month.
  8. Course Corrections: Nope. Failure to check blog statistics usually leads to a failure to make course corrections.
  9. Hang in There: Maybe. Depending on a person’s level of grit, some will hang in there long enough to “get it” and others won’t.

Hmmmm. This list really makes you wonder, doesn’t it? In other words, most people who are new to online MLM expect to get great results by completing about 20% of the items on the list, partially doing 30% of the tasks, and not doing the remaining 50%. Think that will really work?

The Online MLM Journey
Online MLM marketing is a journey. Think of it like you would think about a driving trip from Atlanta to San Francisco. There are 2476 miles between Atlanta and San Francisco, which makes it a long trip, but you really want to get to San Francisco. Realistically, would you expect to complete such a long trip in a car that was missing 50% of its parts, was 30% damaged, and was fully-functioning about 20% of the time?

Probably not.

But a lot of online MLM marketers expect to go from $0 to $20,000 a month using that kind of logic. Short of a miracle, that rarely happens. Ostriches don’t tend to get far before they have to stick their head in the sand.

Are you an online MLM ostrich? If so, do you think you might want to change the way you approach your business?
