Don’t Close People in Online MLM Marketing

by Stephanie Valentine on July 2, 2009

hammerheadI don’t know about you, but sensory overload isn’t the way to convince me to buy or join anything online. Flashing graphics, loud videos, and cluttered sales pages that go on for 9,000 words don’t light my fire. Oh yeah, and the thing I really love about those pages? The ticking countdown clock that tells me I have only 59 minutes left to sign up for this offer. Yuck! What about you? Does it do anything for you?

I’m guessing not.

One of the key MLM principles of one of my very successful upline sponsors is: don’t close people. And yet, when I go to a web page like the one I described above, I feel like I’m being closed. More to the point, I’m being closed in and backed into a corner. I probably won’t buy, but if I do (in a psychotic moment), I won’t be a committed loyal follower of the site. That’s why I don’t advocate closing in MLM, whether you do it online or off.

Why Not Close People in MLM?
Good question. Why not try to close people in MLM? Won’t you get a better commission check at the end of the month? Not really. Here’s what my upline sponsor, Ana Gabriel Mann, says about closing: “What you’re looking for is a committed partnership, not trying to sell people something. Allow them to make their final decision.”

The key word in that quote above is “allow.” In other words, don’t force people to make a decision out of panic (because the countdown clock has almost reached 0) or out of fear (because if they don’t buy what you are offering they will be an MLM failure forever).

Instead, educate, explain, elucidate, enlighten, and empower. Give people solid, useful information with which to make a decision about:

  1. Whether MLM is right for them
  2. Whether your MLM is right for them

How to Avoid Closing People with Online MLM
You probably know how to avoid closing someone in a person-to-person setting. Don’t sit across from them at the Denny’s and pressure them into making a decision “right now.” That’s pretty simple.

But how to avoid closing people when you are marketing your MLM online? Here’s a small list of things to do and not do.

Do:

  • have a classy, professional online presence
  • deliver what you promise (if you promise a blog post on something, deliver it!)
  • ask for what you want clearly (what kind of person do you want in your organization?)
  • be clear about the benefits of joining your organization
  • highlight the good points about your company
  • encourage people to ask questions and engage you in dialog
  • address people’s objections before they come up, since they often don’t come up at all in online interactions

Do not:

  • having a countdown clock
  • use a garish sales page that overpowers people into joining
  • make unrealistic claims about your business, the company, or people’s earnings
  • think that “more is better” when it comes to your online presence (better is better)
  • rely solely on a corporate-approved duplicated website for your online presence
  • be the Billy Mays of the online world

Capiche?

Authentic online MLM marketing is rare. This gives you a chance to be one of the few and the proud … care to take the challenge?
