Don’t Join the MLM Cult of Numbers

by Stephanie on January 12, 2009

I just hate going to MLM seminars where a guy in a fancy suit whips out a deck of cards and proceeds to tell me that my MLM business is a numbers game! The story goes like this: you are looking for all the aces in the deck (quality prospects) and to get the aces you may have to go through all 52 cards. Prospecting is like the deck of cards. To get to the really good prospects you have to wade through all the bad ones. Yuck! That’s what I call the MLM cult of numbers. I, along with a lot of other successful MLM business builders, refuse to join this cult.

You, like us, probably understand the concept of the numbers game. You have probably even been a card-carrying member of the MLM cult of numbers at some point (I was for a long time). The numbers game might have even worked for you, but my question is, “Was it fun?” Did you actually like wading through all the rejections just to get to the one prospect who did join your business? I didn’t and most people I bring into my business don’t.

One of my mottos for my MLM business is that if the marketing method is totally unrewarding or obnoxious I won’t use it, no matter how successful it has been for other people. So I don’t play that old-style numbers game. I’ve got a new game. I do online prospecting and I do keep track of my numbers and stats, but I don’t have a particular figure or conversion rate that I aim for (like the four aces in the deck). My numbers are whatever they are. If 35 people stop in and read my blog post during the day and only two of them bother to contact me, I’m happy. If none of them contact me, I’m happy. I’m just as happy if all 35 people contact me. Why? Because I didn’t do the MLM cult of numbers game and weed out each person face-to-face.

My blog and website tell people exactly who I am and how I do my business. If people don’t like what they read, they won’t contact me. That’s perfect! I love it. It means that they have disqualified themselves as prospects and I didn’t have to lift a finger in the process. In fact, I was probably asleep when they disqualified themselves. How much closer to the lazy girl’s approach to business can you get than that?

I do agree that numbers play an important part in tracking the success of any MLM business. I just don’t want to be the one doing all the counting by hand. I don’t want face-to-face rejection day in and day out. If someone is going to reject my approach, I’ll figure it out by checking my blog and website stats, and it won’t hurt my feelings. I’m part of a new MLM cult. In this cult it’s my job to get the word out there and it’s the prospects job to qualify or disqualify himself. The numbers just tell me whether I’m doing a good job getting the word out on the web or not.

Cheers,
Stephanie
