Don’t Try to Be a MLM Freak

by Stephanie on March 2, 2009

Are You an MLM Freak?

You are a sponsor. You are part of someone’s upline. You are an MLM leader, teacher, and coach. Your people will edify you. That sounds pretty heady, doesn’t it? You have signed someone up and now you are totally responsible for their MLM success, right?

Wrong. It’s tempting to think that because you signed someone up you must now guarantee their success, but any experienced MLM business builder will tell you that it is not going to happen. If you could guarantee a newbie’s MLM success, then you would have to be all things to all people. Let’s face it: no one can do that, not even one of those freakishly successful MLM moguls.

So don’t try to be all things to all the people in your downline. Instead, choose a specific area–within your comfort zone and which matches your skill set–in which to excel because you won’t have enough time to be an expert in every area of MLM (not if you expect to get any sleep at night!). For instance, some people are great conversationalists and they easily handle a full day’s schedule of three-way calls. Others specialize in face-to-face marketing because they come in contact with so many people everyday, perhaps as part of their “regular” job. Still others love organizing and hosting home parties. What area sparks your imagination yet is still within your comfort zone?

Pick a Niche
It’s crucial to choose just one area of expertise because you really need to spend time honing your skills in that area. It takes time to become an expert. For instance, my focus is online MLM and I spend 1-3 hours daily on marketing, which include the following:

1. Researching, writing and posting blog articles
2. Responding to comments on my blog
3. Reading and commenting on other people’s blogs
4. Interacting with others on forums and social media platforms (Twitter, Digg, etc.)
5. Promoting my website, blog, and articles around the internet

Time spent interacting with my downline, prospects, or my downline’s prospects is extra time spent beyond my daily marketing schedule. The same kind of time commitment holds true whether you want to focus on three-way calling or home parties. It pays to be an expert in one area rather than a mediocre jack-of-all-trades.

Leverage Outside Resources
Of course not everyone you bring into your business is going to want to work their business the way you do. No problem. That’s why you have a team and outside resources. Most companies and uplines offer training teleconferences or podcasts that teach new signups the more general aspects of MLM, including phone prospecting, face-to-face prospecting, three-way calling, organization and documentation, and “getting started” training. Send new signups to these trainings for a general education. For all the areas not covered by these training calls, do some research to find outside sources. You might look for companies that offer the following:

- leads for sale
- copywriting services
- general MLM sales materials applicable to your business
- web design and hosting services
- training outside your area of expertise

Research these services by trying them yourself or getting recommendations from your upline. If you bring someone into your business who does not want to work the way you do, offer them these additional services. You may also want to partner them with someone in your upline who does work the way your new signup wants to work, so that your signup has a mentor.

Expertise = Attraction Marketing
Having done all of that, focus on your area of expertise as much as possible. The greater your skill in your chosen area the more likely you will attract people like you into your business. Being an expert also improves your chances of bringing people in through attraction marketing. You stop selling people on your business and you start attracting them with your knowledge and expertise.

What areas of expertise come to mind or are working for you?
