Is Your Online MLM Business Moving Too Slowly?

by Stephanie Valentine on May 18, 2009

wirelessmindlessAs the internet grows in size, one of the biggest complaints that I hear from people doing online MLM marketing is that their business is growing too slowly. I always scratch my head when I hear this complaint, because the growth of the internet is a double-edged sword for us MLMers working online.

The Internet Then and Now for MLM

When I put up my first MLM website, about seven years ago, the internet was growing fast, but nothing compared to the rate at which it is expanding today. Back then, when you put up a website, people could find you more easily. There was less “static in the channel,” so to speak, less competition. At the same time, fewer people were looking online for MLM and home business opportunities, so there was also less traffic. The internet was a small pond back then.

The internet has since become a giant ocean. There’s a lot of space, and also a lot of content and competition. Putting up a website or blog is easier than ever, but getting found is harder. At the same time, the number of online tools available to spread the word about your business has expanded hugely. But people are also savvier, and less open, having been spammed and scammed to hell and back.

So What Do You Do?

So the growth of the internet makes life both easier and harder for the online MLM marketer. The bar has been raised, and you have to work harder to attract people into your business. But there’s also more people looking for you. So what do you do? Here are a couple of things I suggest to my online MLM newbies.

Set Your Bar as High as You Can
It used to be that if you blogged a couple times of week, you were considered to be a pretty good blogger. These days, if you want to truly dominate your niche, count on blogging at least 3 days a week, and really going for 5 days a week. Some people even suggest that you need to have more than one blog - one for each niche you want to attract.

Don’t scare yourself here, but take a realistic look at your life and schedule. Figure out the highest level of effort you can consistently put into your online MLM business. Then set your bar there. You want to make yourself stretch, but make sure you set the bar where you can be consistent. Consistency is one of the all-important keys to success in online marketing.

Don’t Take Score Too Soon
Remember, the internet is a vast ocean, so you are going to be hard to find until you’ve got a solid internet presence. Don’t put in 30 days of effort, and then throw up your hands because no one has signed up for your business. That’s taking score too soon. Don’t count on being an instant success unless you already know how to market online.

Instead, pick a point in the future when you will take score. For instance, you might evaluate the results of your efforts after 100 blog posts, after 6 months, or after you have gotten 5,000 unique visitors to your website. Until you hit that “magic point in time,” keep your head down and keep trucking. Look at your online statistics and learn from them, but don’t judge your efforts by your stats. Growth in your online MLM business probably won’t be geometric, so if your stats are not growing very fast right now, don’t despair. You will experience exponential jumps in results at certain points, such as when you discover your online voice or when your online presence reaches a critical mass.

Online MLM - The Biggest New Frontier

I hope that helps. I believe that the internet is the biggest new frontier of the MLM business. People in this industry are just learning how to use online promotion, but it’s early in the game, yet. Now is the time to figure out how to promote your MLM business online because the space is only going to get bigger and more crowded with time. Ready, set, go!
