For those who despair of ever getting their home party invitations right or who are afraid of three-way calls, I have to tell you a story about MLM prospecting. While MLM is often referred to as “conversational marketing,” I have to tell you that there are actually MLM hermits who have never had a single live conversation with their prospects and yet have managed to make it to the top of their company’s pay level.
There was one particularly successful MLM hermit who did his business entirely by direct mail. Of course, this was many years ago, when direct mail still superseded the power of e-commerce. This particular MLM business builder simply bought leads lists and mailed thousands and thousands of information packets to those leads. He bought tapes, brochures, bubble mailers, labels, and stamps in bulk. He wrote awesome copy to go with his mailers. His MLM prospecting method consisted of sitting in his living room in front of his television set, and filling and labeling bubble mailers. He went to the post office daily and answered questions from prospects by only mail.
He made it to the top of his company’s pay grade and it did not take forever. For the most part his prospects never met him until they became distributors and came to corporate events and local distributor meetings. And even when they did meet him, they didn’t find him to be highly sociable (I’ve met him so I know). But he did succeed in his MLM business and he used a prospecting method that would have basically worked for any hermit. He’s also not the only hermit to climb to the top of an MLM compensation plan. MLM hermits do succeed, rare though they are.
I share this information about successful MLM hermits not so you can become one yourself but so you know that there are many ways to succeed in your MLM business. If you are more of an introvert than an extrovert there are ways to become a successful digital MLM hermit. Your MLM prospecting approach can include marketing through email, online forums, articles, pre-recorded audios, ebooks, free reports, and book critiques. You don’t have to ever use your voice if you don’t want to. You can save your voice for your acceptance speech at your parent company’s annual gathering when you are awarded top honors!
When it comes to choosing prospecting methods for your MLM business, be honest with yourself about whether you are an introvert or an extrovert. If you are a lifelong introvert and have no real desire to become an extrovert, you can still succeed in MLM. More importantly, being an introvert yourself you can market to the rest of the introverts in the world, a segment of the population generally overlooked by most MLM business builders. According to Dr. Ed Diener from the University of Illinois, introverts make up 20 to 30% of the population, and that’s still a lot of people even if a minority. Whether you want to be an MLM hermit or just find a quiet marketing approach that works for you, don’t let those loud-mouthed extroverted MLM trainers convince you that you have to become an extrovert to succeed. Be yourself in your MLM prospecting methods and you will attract others like you to your business.
