Suppose you just got back from the annual convention for your MLM (the one for my MLM just happened) and there’s all this “buzz” about online MLM marketing and social media. You, like any good MLMer, decide to take part in this trend and jump right in! Wowee!
Only, it’s not that simple. Unless you have an upline telling you exactly what to do and how to do it, the online world turns out to much more confusing than you originally thought. It can also be much more time-consuming than you thought.
After all, you can barely keep up with email and voice mail. Now you add Twitter, Facebook, Digg, online forums, and article directories to the mix. Now you REALLY have no time!
What’s a Newbie Online MLM Marketer to Do? 3 Steps
There’s no need to panic. Really. You can do online MLM marketing if you just get your head screwed on straight and then follow some basic steps to create a plan that suits your personality and lifestyle.
Step 1 - Get Your Feet Wet
First of all, if your company or your upline offers some coaching about online marketing, attend those trainings as a great way to get your feet wet.
Step 2 - Experiment a Little
Once you’ve figured the basic platforms for online marketing, go check ‘em out. Sign up for a few accounts at different social media sites and try them out. Think of these as experimental. You can always trash those accounts and start new ones later if you really screw up big time (which, by the way, is harder to do than you might think because online folks have short memories).
Step 3 - Make a SIMPLE Plan
Note that it says “SIMPLE” plan. That’s because if you make a complicated online MLM marketing plan, you won’t stick to it. Nope, you’ll bail after a couple of weeks because the learning curve is too steep and keeping up with all that online communication gets too time-consuming.
To make a SIMPLE plan, pick a couple of online sites or media that you like best. If you’re a short comment kind of person, Twitter’s 140 character limit is perfect for you. Long-winded? Go with your own blog and post the best blogs to article directories.
Once you’ve picked a couple of online marketing outlets, make a plan for how often you will interact on or with those outlets. In other words, suppose you pick Twitter. Ask yourself these questions:
- How often will you get on Twitter to tweet, retweet, and respond to people?
- How often will you search for new people to follow and message?
- Will you be “on” all the time or will you just get on twice a day?
- Will your tweets be all business or will you throw in a bunch of personal stuff, too?
- Will you be accessible 7 days a week or only on certain days?
Once you figure out a strategy, commit to it. The same goes for a blog, LinkedIn, or any other online marketing media. Make a plan. This plan is “what you do online.” Once you have that plan, do what you do for a year.
Yup, you heard me, a year. Do what you do. If you blog twice a week, do it for a year. If you want to use Twitter, tweet for a year. Do what you do for a year. That’s how you truly learn how to do online MLM marketing. Just do what you do.
You want to become like the doughnut guy who keeps saying, “It’s time to make the doughnuts!” Online marketing should be like that. Day in, day out, make the doughnuts, do the online marketing.
