Question: What Problems Still Need to Be Solved in Online MLM?

by Stephanie Valentine on July 21, 2009

Answer: A lot!

As I have written about a lot recently, online MLM is just getting its feet wet and has a long way to go before the industry achieves an authentic and professional presence. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of people out there doing fabulously authentic online marketing and an equally large number of people doing great MLM marketing. It’s the intersection between these two groups–online marketers and MLM marketers–where we find the excessively cheesey websites filled with yellow-highlighted text, flashing neon signs, and way too much hype.

How do we tackle this problem? I see a lot of places to start. Here are some questions that come to mind:

  1. We’ve figured out how to sell product online, but how do we bring people into the MLM business via an online portal (a much more complicated process)?
  2. In a world of duplicated-to-heck MLM websites, how do we brand ourselves as individuals?
  3. When our MLM companies have strict online rules, how do we work with and around them to create a genuine online voice that attracts the people we want?
  4. How do we teach people how to market MLM online in a way that is clear, concise, and not overwhelming?
  5. What can we learn from online marketing and social media pros that would help the online MLM industry?
  6. How does the online marketing lifecycle differ from the offline marketing lifecycle in MLM, and how do we prepare our people for these differences?
  7. Who should choose online MLM marketing as their primary form of promotion, and who should avoid it like the plague?
  8. How computer-savvy does an MLM marketing wannabe need to be to succeed?
  9. Do you actually still have to talk to people when you do online MLM marketing? (Yes!)
  10. How do we help our people who want to market online find their online voice?
  11. How do we start people? Offline MLM has tried-and-true methods for training their people. We need the same.

These are questions I’ll be pondering over the next couple of weeks as I spend some “thinking time” in Zion National Park. I’m in an absolutely enchanting environment and it’s bound to bring inspiration, new thought, and innovation to this blog. In the meantime, this blog will be on vacation until the early part of August … so please enjoy these questions, noodle on them, and shoot me a comment or email if you see something I left off the list (I’m sure there’s lots!). Meanwhile, Milagro, my trusty supermodel chihuahua and I are off to hike, think, dream, and plan!
