Squeezing your work into itty-bitty time slots

So I really believe that we should work only when we feel inspired, striking when the “iron is hot” so to speak. I have always worked to this philosophy, and it works really great.  Sometimes when I’m feeling down and disenchanted one of my business partners on the Stream Team is rarin’ to go. And vice versa. That’s why it works so great to have a partner and work as a team. The work never stops even if one of us is stopped!

Now I want to blog about a similar topic … what to do if you don’t have a whole lot of time to do your network marketing business (or really, any home business). Being that this is a home business blog, this should resonate with lotsa people out there, whether you are working your business full time from home or whether you are squeezing in your work after your regular job or on the weekends.

I work out of my home office all the time. I’m blessed to be able to do so. But that doesn’t mean that I have a totally open schedule to work my biz all day every day. I also have other clients (I do book and website consulting–see a website sample here and here–as well as some ghostwriting) and sometimes the appointments and due dates really pile up.

Like today. First off, it’s the end of the month. If you’re in network marketing, then you know the end of the month is a big deal. It’s the time when you have to check qualifications for your title and make sure all your ducks are in a row to get the maximum commission check possible. This month I also have a downline member who is moving up to the next title and there are LOTS of ducks to get in a row (ever tried herding ducks? Not easy!). So that’s going on.

Next, my hubby Alan and I have some social engagements planned for today plus some work to do on our micro-farm/ranch.

Finally, I have a couple of conference calls today that I have to prepare for. So … my schedule today is diced up pretty much as fine as the jalapenos that go into my salsa! But it doesn’t mean that I’m not gonna work my network marketing biz today. I am. I’m just squeezing it into the little time slots available. This morning I had about 20 minutes before a conference call so I pulled up a couple of article directories and submitted three articles to each directory. Then onto the conference call.

Right now, I have about 45 minutes before a social engagement so (after I finish this post, of course) I’m going to proof an article I wrote yesterday, edit it, write the summaries and keywords for it, and basically get it ready to post next week. This afternoon, I’ll have a couple of slots as well — about 30 to 45 minutes each. I’ll submit articles to a couple more directories and read a chapter or two from an ebook on online marketing I’ve been meaning to study.

The keys to all of this “squeezing” of work into teensy time slots are, of course, organization and automation. As far as organization goes, I have the article directories bookmarked on my browser, I keep my login name and password consistent across the directories as much as possible, and I have a folder on my computer desktop with all the necessary articles lined up and ready to go. I have a spreadsheet that tracks what I’ve posted where and when.

So yeah, today is kind of a rough day in terms of schedule, but I’ll still go to sleep knowing that I’ve gotten something achieved on my business. Plus, as soon as I have an article posted I know it’s working for me even when I’m asleep. Woo-hoo!
