Who the Heck Are You and Why Should I Like You?

guesswhoWho the Heck Are You and Why Should I Like You?

I have a good friend, Mark, who says about himself, “I’m a dirty old man and you can’t offend me.” I’m not sure whether the first part of the statement is true or not, but I have yet to offend him. If Mark were an MLM business, then I would say he had a brand and a voice.

He sees himself as an indestructible old battleship that has seen its share of combat and can’t be phased. He’s unapologetic about it. He’s even blatant about it. Some people love him. Some people just like him. Few people dislike him. Very few people overlook him. Mark stands out.

Does your MLM business stand out of the crowd? Can people tell a difference between your opportunity and everyone else’s MLM business? If not, then you’re going to be paddling upstream trying to attract people to your business opportunity, especially if you are trying to offer it online.

Anyone you prospect for your MLM opportunity, unless they are related to you, is probably going to be asking this question: “Who are you and why should I like you?” In other words, what makes your opportunity so special?

Here are some ways you might answer that question. Is there anything special about:

- your personality
- your background and experience
- the way you work your business
- your upline
- your downline
- the training you offer
- the statistics you know
- the people you know
- the specific method you use for prospecting
- ways you have found to maximize your company’s compensation plan
- the rate at which you have grown your group
- the rate at which your sponsors have grown their groups
- the tools you use online and offline to promote your business

In other words, if you are a two-headed giant peddling the same MLM opportunity as the guy down the street, chances are that you will be more notorious. Being notorious doesn’t always get you business, but it gives you more chances to offer your business opportunity.

The same holds true for online MLM marketing. People may not visit your site initially to find out about your opportunity, but for other reasons. If your MLM website or blog is filled with useful MLM information or funny jokes or helpful statistics, people may find you for these reasons. However, they may stick around and join your business for other, less intriguing reasons that are nevertheless valid.

In the U.S. particularly, MLM faces the stigma of having been a “scam.” Although this industry is now developing a lot more credibility, people sometimes need a “reason” to visit your MLM site other than the business opportunity.

If you can find a reason for people to find you, hang out, and get to know you, then you are many steps ahead of the people who primarily offer MLM hype online.
